IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2014 (Final Day) China fencers dominate in Hong Kong

The Chinese squad showed their strength in depth to add two gold medals to the tally including Men’s Foil Team and Women’s Epee Team, which was staged in the final day of the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2014, where took place at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre.China came away with the gold to beat Poland 45-31 in the final of Men’s Foil Team. Russia had to settle for bronze when they outclassed Hong Kong 45-31.Further success for China came in the Women’s Epee Team although they were struggled to find the best form in the middle of the competition, they kept their head up and clinched to produce an exciting battle with 45-36 victory over Russia.
 
Hong Kong failed to earn a spot in the finals of both events but some local supporters soon had something to cheer as they sealed a win in the Women’s Epee Team for a bronze.
Leading by Chan Yui Chong who previously claimed a bronze in the Women’s Individual (Category A) Foil, Hong Kong overcame Poland for a 45-33 victory, taking the third medals in the competition for Hong Kong.Chan was delighted with the brilliant performance of her teammates
 
“We found our form well today as all my teammates reached their peak and showed a strong winning spirit. It was a big surprise to beat Hungary in the quarterfinal as they are such a strong competitor but we managed to beat them. We haven’t expected to earn any medals, however, winning a bronze in this world-class event really make our happy day,” said Chan.

China grabs two Golds

The third day of the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2014 continued to showcase at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre.
 
Three gold medals are at stake included Men’s Individual (Category A) Sabre, Men’s Individual (Category B) Sabre and Women’s Individual (Category A) Sabre.
 
In the Final of the Men’s Individual (Category A) Sabre, Chinese athletes showed their strength in depth and three of the four podium places went to the Chinese team. Chen Yi Jun came away with the gold by beating teammate Liu Xue Feng 15-10. Another Chinese fencer Ye Ru Yi shared third place with Ukraine player Vadym Tsedrik.
 
In the Final of the Men’s Individual (Category B) Sabre, the top-ranked Ukraine’s Anton Datsko regained his reputation with a brilliant 15-8 victory over Italian Alessio Sarri to take gold. Grzegodz Pluta of Poland took joint third place alongside countryman Adrian Castro.
 
In the Women’s Individual (Category A) Sabre, China’s Bian Jing went on to win gold of her own, out-doing Ukraine’s Nataliia Morkvych 15-5 for the top prize. Another Ukrainian Yevheniia Breus shared the bronze with Poland’s star fencer Marta Fidrych.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2014 (Day Three) Team events kick off

The third day of the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2014 continued to showcase at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre and team events kick off in the afternoon while the round of sixteen of Men’s Team Foil will be staged at around 16:30pm.
Three gold medals are at stake included Men’s Individual (Category A) Sabre, Men’s Individual (Category B) Sabre and Women’s Individual (Category A) Sabre.
 
In the Men’s Individual (Category A) Sabre, Hong Kong fencers showed their class as Chan Wing Kin, who ranks world’s third, produced an easy victory 15-7 over Valeriy Haliy from Ukraine while another Hong Kong player Cheong Meng Chai fencing impressively on his way to the round of sixteen by beating Frenchman Alain Febvre. Chan and Cheong will battle it out for the place in the semi-final. 
 
In the Men’s Individual (Category B) Sabre, Leung Siu Lun beat Canada’s Zbigniew Wyganowski to seal a place in the semi-final.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2014 is the fifth major wheelchair fencing competition being held in town after previous events in 1994, 2006, 2012 and 2013. Being one of the sanctioned ranking competitions for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, this year, it lined up with a recording breaking over 150 fencers from 24 countries and territories to fight for their crown.

The second day of the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix - Hong Kong 2014 continued to showcase at Ma On Shan Sports Centre. Four gold medals were at stake on the second day of the event which is Men’s Individual Epee Cat. A, Men’s Individual Epee Cat B, Women’s Individual Epee Cat A and Women’s Individual Epee CatB.
 
Men’s Individual Epee Cat. A after the quarterfinals, China’s Tian Jian Quan and Sun Gang repelled both strong competitors from Russia to joined the semi-finals. However, Sun Gang qualifying finals. As the result, Great Britain’s Gilliver Piers successfully claimed the gold medal and Sun Gang got the silver medal. The China’s Tian Jian Quan and France's Noble Romain both got bronze.
 
For the Men’s Individual Epee Cat B, Hong Kong’s Tam Chik Sum repelled the representative from UK and joins the semi-finals. Finally, Kuzyukov Alexander(Russia) won the gold medal and Tam Chik Sum made the silver medal for Hong Kong. France’s Cratere Mare Andre and UK’s Guissone Jovane both got bronze.

Women’s Individual Epee Cat A, China’s Rong Jing and Zou Xu Feng joined the semi-finals. Zou Xu Feng joined smoothly into the finals but ultimately lost to strong competitor - Krajnyak Zsuzasanna from Hungary. Zou Xu Feng won the silver medal. China’s Rong Jing and Russia’s Efimova Yuliya both got bronze.

For the Women’s Individual Epee Cat B, China’s Zhou Jing Jing joined the semi-finals. But in the final, Briese-baetke Simone from Germany successfully claimed the gold medal, Zhou Jing Jing got the silver medal. The France’s Demaude Cecile and Russia’s Mishurova Irina achieved bronze.

2014 IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix – Hong Kong 2013 Day One Official Results

The IWAS Wheelchair Fencing Grand Prix - Hong Kong 2014 kicked off today (18 December) at Ma On Shan Sports Centre. Four gold medals were at stake on the first day of the event which are Men’s Individual Foil Cat. A, Men’s Individual Foil Cat B, Women’s Individual Foil Cat A and Women’s Individual Foil Cat B. After first day of competition, China tops the medal table with three golds, four silvers and three bronzes followed by Italy with a gold, and Hong Kong with one bronze.
